Three as a Teaching Pattern
Three recurs in Masonic teaching as a pattern: a beginning, a development and a completion, so one idea can be seen from three angles.
Three recurs in Masonic teaching because it gives learning a simple shape: a beginning, a development and a completion. Across the three craft degrees the same moral questions return at a deeper level, so a member meets one idea three times rather than once.
The threefold pattern is a teaching device more than a claim about numbers. It is useful because memory works better with a return. Each return asks the same question with more experience, and the pattern helps a student recognise progress without a sudden leap.
Example: a member who hears about fidelity as an apprentice may later understand it as a duty to others and finally as a choice made with full knowledge of its cost. The word stays the same; the understanding grows with each return.
