Why Are Masonic Meetings Private?

Guido Mond

Masonic privacy can concern ceremonies, personal information and ways of recognition; these are different matters.

Understanding the subject

A reader should ask what each restriction protects. Preserving a candidate’s experience differs from protecting someone against scrutiny. The Czech Grand Lodge describes several kinds of secrecy, rather than one hidden doctrine. Respectful discretion needs boundaries: it should never become an excuse for concealing harm or silencing a reasonable complaint.

A practical reflection

For example, a member may reasonably expect a personal difficulty discussed in confidence to remain private. That expectation does not answer how a financial complaint should be investigated. Different kinds of information require different responsibilities.

Questions and answers

Are all Masonic activities private?

No. Public talks, museums and events also exist.

Does privacy prove wrongdoing?
