What Is the Rough Ashlar?

Guido Mond

The rough ashlar is a stone used in Masonic symbolism to explore work on oneself.

Understanding the subject

The image need not imply that a person is worthless before initiation. A more humane reading begins with existing capacities that need patient development. Choose one observable habit, such as interrupting others, and work on it deliberately. Improvement is easier to discuss honestly when it concerns actions rather than declarations of personal perfection.

A practical reflection

The metaphor becomes less helpful when someone appoints himself the sculptor of everyone else. Self-improvement begins with the person doing the interpreting. Offer guidance with consent, allow disagreement and avoid mistaking another person’s individuality for a defect to be removed.

Questions and answers

Does the symbol promise perfection?

No. It can frame continuing self-examination.

Is this a literal building lesson?

Here the stone is being interpreted symbolically.
