What Does the All-Seeing Eye Mean?

Guido Mond

In traditional Masonic commentary, the eye can represent divine watchfulness; it is not exclusively Masonic.

Understanding the subject

An eye on a building or banknote is therefore insufficient evidence of Masonic ownership or control. Identify the object, its maker and its documented context before interpreting it. As an ethical reflection, the image asks what we do when praise and witnesses are absent. That question concerns responsibility rather than surveillance technology.

A practical reflection

There are two different enquiries: how a tradition explains the image, and what happened at a particular place. The first requires interpretive sources; the second requires records of events. Confusing them turns visual association into an unsupported accusation.

Questions and answers

Does every eye symbol identify Freemasonry?

No. The image appears in other traditions.

Can a logo establish a conspiracy?

No. Such a claim requires independent evidence.
