Why Ritual Repeats
Ritual repeats so that the meaning of words and gestures can be learned, remembered and re-examined over time.
Ritual repeats because repetition turns words and gestures into shared understanding. A single performance informs; repeated performance forms memory and habit.
Freemasonry uses ritual, symbols and degrees to teach moral lessons through action rather than lecture alone. Each repetition lets a member notice something missed before and compare his own understanding with that of others.
Example: a newly admitted member may hear the same opening several times before its sentences make sense. After a few meetings, his attention moves from memorising the sequence to asking what the passage asks of him in practice.
