Justice Tempered by Mercy
In Masonic teaching justice is the firm standard that guides judgement, and mercy is the restraint that keeps justice from becoming cruelty.
In Masonic teaching justice is a firm standard for judgement, and mercy is the restraint that keeps justice from becoming cruelty. The two are taught together, so that a member who judges others is asked to hold both in one act.
Justice without mercy hardens into a rule that ignores circumstance. Mercy without justice becomes indulgence that betrays those who were harmed. The teaching asks the member to weigh the facts carefully, apply the rule of the lodge, and then consider what restores a brother rather than only what punishes him.
Example: a member who has broken a lodge rule through carelessness may receive a clear correction and a chance to repair the harm. The rule is applied, the consequence is real, and the path back remains open. Both values are visible in the same decision.
