Brotherhood When Brothers Disagree

Study group

Brothers can disagree and remain in fellowship when the difference is stated honestly, argued by the rules and kept apart from personal standing.

Brothers can disagree and still remain in fellowship when the difference is stated honestly, argued within the lodge’s rules, and kept separate from personal standing.

Freemasonry asks members to treat one another as equals in the lodge, whatever their roles outside it. That equality does not require agreement. It requires that each person can speak, be heard, accept a decision reached by the proper procedure, and keep the right to dissent through that same procedure.

Example: in a debate about moving a meeting date, one brother defends the old date by tradition and another for attendance. The chair asks each to state a reason in one sentence, a vote is taken, and both thank each other at the close. The disagreement ends with the vote and does not become a grudge.
